ABSTRACT |
Objects : The authors reviewed the patients with self poisoning who ingested drug or toxic material for the purpose of suicide, euphoria, misuse and accidental.
Method : The medical records of all patients with self poisoning diagnosed or treated at Korea university hospital between Jan. 1, 1994 to Dec. 31, 1995 were reviewed. 205 cases of self-poisonings are presented.
Results : The patients with self-poisoning were significantly prominent in female and younger ages between 20 and 39 yrs.(male : female = 1 : 1.73, 20-39yrs, 137 cases)
Of 205 patients, 75 had admitted including 18 ICU care and the others were transferred to 1st or
2ndary hospital or discharged after primary treatment(Transferred 60 patients, discharged 130 patients) The causes of self-poisoning were suicides, accidentals, misuses and euphoric attempts(178, 11, 7 and
9 cases).
Antihistamines are the most commonly ingested drugs(33.6%).
The ingested materials were purchased from drug stores(98 cases) and the others from doctor's prescription and chemical stores.
Conclusion Self-drug ingestions are a lethal subject of poisoning. Although some self-poisoning patients ingested the drugs from doctor's prescription, most of them purchased from drug stores or chemial stores without any prohibition.
New education programs for preventing self-poisoning and legal control of these materials are important and necessary.
