ABSTRACT
Study Objective : To assess relation between the amount of the organophosphate ingestion & the amount of the used atropine on acute organophosphate intoxication patient.
Design
Retropective, single-blind, controlled level, conducted from January 1992 through December 1993.
Setting
The Wonkwang university hospital emergency department Participants : Eighty-four consecutive adults more than 18 years of age who presented with organophosphate intoxication Interventions : Eligible subjects received 8.0mg(16cc)/1hour by syringe pump until full atropinization(eg., full dilatation of pupil, 160 times/ min〉 heart rate, atropine psychosis), and then atropine tapering was done. Patients were observed twenty-four hours in the ED after atropine administration. Measurements & main results : Twenty patients completed the study because sixty-four patients were unknown with the amount of the organophosphate ingestion or done not followed the prescribed atropinization schedule. The amount of the organophosphate ingestion correlated with the total amount of atropine, the amount of the full atropinization, the pulse rate. The Followings are the results. (1) The amount of the organophosphate ingestion was significantly correlated with the total amount of atropine(P : 0.0001, R squared : 0.681, Y=0.573+66.129) and the amount of the full atropinization (P : 0.0001, R squared : 0.587, Y=0.357X+33.997). (2) The pulse rate had no significant correlation with the amount of the organophosphate in gestion(P : 0.276, R squared : 0.066, Y= ― 0.043X+101.161).
Conclusion
The ingested organophosphate detoxification was correlated with the total amount of atropine and the amount of the full atropinization and we could predicted to the amount of the used atropine.
Key words: amount of organophosphate ingestion total amount of atropine, amount of full atropinization
