The Pediatric Trauma Score as a Predictor of Injury Severity in the Injured Child
Kyung Soo Lim, Sung Joon Kang, Soo Young Yoo, Hun Joo Kim
ABSTRACT
The Pediatric Trauma Score (PTS) was evaluated in 3,201 injured children by a physician in an Emergency Department. Most common vector of injury associated death was traffic accident. Mortality for the group was 3.0%, among them, D.O.A. occupied 1.7%. No deaths occurred in patients whose PTS was >8, which defined as the Critical Triage Point. Children whose PTS was between 1 and 8 had an increasing mortality related to their decreasing PTS, and children whose PTS was below 0 had 100% mortality. This study documents the direct linear relationship between P.T.S. and injury severity, and confirrn the PTS as an effective predictor of both severity of injury and potential for mortality. So children whose P.T.S. below 8 must be cared for at hospital where intensive or critical care can be performed.
